3 Mistakes to Avoid With Your Thermostat in Wake County, NC

The thermostat is an integral part of your Wake County, NC home’s HVAC system for controlling your indoor comfort. Here are three common thermostat errors and how to avoid them.

1. Installing in the Wrong Location

The thermostat senses the temperature within the space where the HVAC technician installed it. Placing it in a space that is too cold in winter or too warm in summer will cause your HVAC system to run longer. It is best to place it on an interior wall in a room used often, such as a family room.

You don’t want it placed too low or too high on a wall either. A good rule of thumb is between four to five feet above the floor for the most accurate reading and easy accessibility. It is also recommended that you don’t place it near a register.

2. Turning the Temperature Up or Down

Many people still have manual thermostats rather than programmable smart thermostats. When you return home on a warm day, you might want to quickly cool the house by turning it way down.

Your HVAC system does not work faster the more you adjust the temperature. Cranking the thermostat up or down will only cause your HVAC system to work harder, resulting in wasted energy.

3. Turning the Thermostat Completely Off

While you might think it is a good idea to turn off the thermostat to save energy when you leave the house for the day or for vacation, this isn’t necessarily helpful. When you return home, the air will likely be stale, unhealthy and uncomfortable.
