How Do Boilers Work in Wake County, NC?

Using a boiler is an efficient way of heating your home in Wake County, NC, but not all boilers are created equal. Therefore, it’s worth taking a few minutes to review the different types of boilers that are available and the principles behind how each one works. To learn more about how boilers help you stave off the winter cold, read our guide below.

Understanding Different Boiler Types

Most HVAC professionals classify a boiler first by its fuel type. In general, residential boilers use gas, electricity or oil as their primary energy source.

Gas boilers are typically the least expensive, and electric boilers have a reputation for being cleaner but not as efficient as the other two types. Although the cost of operating an oil boiler fluctuates with the price of its fuel, these heating systems can also be quite efficient.

How a Boiler Helps Keep Your Home Warm

Just as you can classify boilers by their fuel type, you can also classify them by their heating method. Hot water boilers heat your home’s water to approximately 30 degrees below boiling temperature, which is 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level, and distribute the heated water via an electrical pump. Steam boilers, as their name suggests, heat your home’s water past its boiling temperature and distribute the resulting steam through your radiators.

Traditional Boilers vs. Modern Boilers

Traditional boilers provide central heating but don’t heat water for your use. However, modern boilers give you the best of both worlds by storing heated water in a separate tank and then distributing it as required. Experts consider these modern heating systems to be more efficient, and modern units also tend to require less maintenance than traditional boilers.
