My Heat Pump in Spring Hope, NC Blows Cool in Heating Mode

A heat pump is designed to both heat and cool your home, but it sometimes blows cold air when it’s supposed to be in heating mode. Here are just a few reasons why your heat pump might fail to blow warm air when it should.

1. Your Heat Pump Is in Defrost Mode

When ice forms on your heat pump’s outdoor unit, it often goes into defrost mode to melt it away. This essentially works the same way as a heat pump’s cooling mode, so you’ll likely feel cool air when the unit is defrosting. Check if the thermostat indicates it’s in defrost mode and give it some time to finish before calling for repairs.

2. You Have a Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that absorbs heat from the outside air and circulates it throughout your home. If your refrigerant levels are low due to a leak, your heat pump won’t be able to draw enough heat from outside to heat your home.

3. You Have a Failing Reversing Valve

The reversing valve controls the flow of refrigerant in your heat pump. If it’s damaged or otherwise faulty, it won’t be able to switch between its heating and cooling modes. If it gets stuck in cooling mode, it’s going to blow cold air.

4. Your Outdoor Unit Is Dirty

If the coils on your outdoor unit are caked with dust and dirt, they won’t be able to draw enough heat for your home. Not only could this leave you feeling uncomfortably cold, but it could damage your heat pump if it goes unchecked for long. Check your outdoor unit regularly and make sure it’s kept clean, especially if you’ve been hit by severe weather.
