3 Common Summertime Heat Pump Problems in Franklin County, NC

During the summer your heat pump is extra busy trying to regulate indoor temperatures, control humidity levels, and clean the indoor air. Since the system is in use daily, it’s not unusual for it to need attention. Below, we will cover heat pump problems commonly seen in Franklin County, NC during warmer weather.

1. Short Cycling

Short cycling happens when your heat pump initiates a cooling cycle, shuts down before completing the cycle and starts over again. Short cycling increases your energy costs and the wear and tear on your system’s components.

A short cycling heat pump doesn’t distribute the cooled air evenly. In addition, it doesn’t have time to remove excessive humidity from your indoor living space.

Short cycling occurs when you have an oversized system, a clogged air filter, refrigerant leaks or a faulty thermostat. Allow a technician to inspect your system to diagnose the underlying issue accurately.

2. Running Continuously

Ideally, heat pumps should operate in cycles to regulate your indoor temperatures. Continuously running may be a sign of an underlying problem.

Some of the issues that may cause your system to run constantly include a clogged air filter, refrigerant leaks, dirty coils or an undersized heat pump. However, extreme temperatures may cause it to run almost continuously to regulate the indoor temperatures. This is normal behavior.

Overheating occurs when your system overworks, and an overheated air conditioner may trigger the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker cuts the electricity supply to the air conditioner as a safety precaution. Should this happen, call a professional technician to repair the underlying conditions and restore your family’s comfort.

3. Uneven Temperature Regulation

When your heat pump absorbs heat from your indoor air, it sends the cooled air back to your living space. An efficient system should distribute this air evenly through the installed air handler and into a room. A clogged air handler, fan issues and blocked vents are some of the problems that may cause hot and cold spots in your home.
