4 Causes of Poor Airflow in Your Home in Bunn, NC

In Bunn, NC, bad airflow affects the ability of your climate-control system to keep your home cool during the summer. Here are four issues that could affect the free flow of air within your home.

1. Furnace Filters

Dirty furnace filters don’t allow air to pass through them easily. Restricting the flow of air could result in your climate-control system freezing. The same is true of some furnace filters with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating that’s too high for your HVAC system.

These highly efficient filters, typically rated 14 and up, keep out finer particles of dirt than less-efficient filters, and to do that, they must have more resistance to airflow. Switching to a filter in the 8 to 13 range can improve your airflow and prevent climate-control problems. It can still have a beneficial effect on your indoor air quality, too.

2. Faulty Ductwork

Ductwork can have crooked layouts or other aspects of poor design, such as being too long. Each duct run should be as short as possible. To remedy this issue, a professional HVAC technician would have to replace the ductwork.

3. Leaks

Leaks anywhere reduce the amount of air getting to where it’s supposed to go. You might have leaks from separated joints or holes in the ductwork.

Gaps in window and door seals can also leak air from your home. It’s important to check throughout your home, as issues with the seal of your home can play a role in problems even if they’re not obviously related to your HVAC system.

4. Too Few Return Vents

Air flows easily from places of high pressure to places of low pressure. But if you don’t have enough return air vents, then the pressure will be higher inside your home than outside. As a result, it’s more difficult for air to flow properly in your home.

If you’re experiencing poor airflow with your climate-control system, a professional HVAC technician can help. Give us a call at Alford Mechanical and Air Conditioning for HVAC maintenance today.
